Thailand welcomed over 100 contestants on Sunday as the 74th Miss Universe pageant began in Bangkok. Among them was Cambodia’s representative, whose participation has caused debate due to ongoing tensions between the two countries.
The pageant, held under the theme “The Grand Universe: The Power of Love, The Power of Thailand,” marks the fourth time Thailand has hosted this global competition. Events will take place until November 21 across Bangkok, Phuket, and Pattaya, highlighting Thailand’s tourism and culture.
Cambodia’s contestant, Thai Neary Socheata, also known as Fiyata, arrived in Bangkok despite Cambodia’s national license holder, ELEVENTO9 Company, announcing the country’s withdrawal a day earlier citing “unresolved situations between Cambodia and Thailand.”
"I’ve arrived safely in Thailand. Thank you for the warm welcome, kindness, and support from everyone. Your love truly means so much to me."
Fiyata’s independent decision to participate in the contest has sparked online debate in both Cambodia and Thailand. She was warmly received by Cambodian fans at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
The 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand gathers contestants amid geopolitical tensions, with Cambodia’s representative choosing to participate independently, fostering diverse public reactions.
