New Zealand will use their upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies to sharpen preparations for next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The series begins in Auckland on Wednesday and features several changes due to injuries.
Five key players are sidelined: Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring). Fast bowler Kyle Jamieson and spinner Ish Sodhi are among those fit and ready for selection.
Former captain Kane Williamson will not participate after announcing his retirement from T20 internationals. Mitchell Santner, the all-rounder, will lead the team once more as preparations continue for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Uncapped pacer Nathan Smith has earned inclusion and could make his T20I debut, while quick Matt Henry is being rested to focus on the forthcoming ODI and Test series against the Caribbean side.
“It’s great to have five opportunities to take on a dangerous side like the West Indies,” said coach Rob Walter.
The clash against the West Indies will be New Zealand’s final international series before the T20 World Cup early next year.
New Zealand names a reshaped T20I squad for their home series against the West Indies, missing several stars but led by Santner to fine-tune ahead of next year's World Cup.
