James Overy, a talented defender from Manchester United's academy, has been called up to Australia's national team for the upcoming friendly matches against Colombia and Venezuela. The 17-year-old right-back is one of several fresh faces selected by coach Tony Popovic as he works to expand squad depth ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The 26-player roster includes seven uncapped athletes, emphasising Popovic’s focus on blending youth and experience. Overy, who joined Manchester United’s academy last year, has yet to feature for the senior team but impressed with his performances during the under-20 World Cup.
Along with the new additions, Popovic is also bringing back key midfielders Jackson Irvine and Riley McGree following their recoveries from injury. Their return is expected to add balance and leadership to the team alongside the emerging young talents.
Experienced winger Craig Goodwin has rejoined the national squad after a period away, following his move back to Adelaide City in the A-League. His leadership and familiarity with the domestic competition could prove valuable in integrating the newer players.
"James Overy’s selection highlights both his promise and Popovic’s commitment to nurturing emerging Australian defenders."
