Jasmine Crockett, a Democratic congresswoman from Texas, revealed last week that she is seriously contemplating a Senate campaign. In an interview with Dasha Burns on Politico's “The Conversation,” Crockett said,
“I’m seriously weighing it to the extent that I’m about to spend a lot of money to get data. So I’m a data-driven person. I will tell you that I personally believe that Texas needs to do something different if they wanted different results. That’s just the bottom line.”
No Democrat has won a Senate race in Texas since 1988. Senator John Cornyn is running for reelection next year for a fifth term.
Crockett explained that her decision to run will come late in the process, emphasizing the challenge ahead for any Democrat to defeat Cornyn:
“I’mma be flat-out with you and tell you that I don’t think that there’s a Democrat that can take out Cornyn.”
She also mentioned that the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) is heavily investing in Cornyn's primary campaign to secure his victory. However, The National News Desk could not verify this claim, and the NRSC did not respond to inquiries about their spending before publication.
Jasmine Crockett's potential Senate bid highlights the ongoing challenge Democrats face in Texas Senate races, balancing data-driven strategies with the political realities of the state.
