Somerset Council is encouraging all eligible residents to receive their flu vaccination if they haven’t done so yet. The ideal time for immunisation is in autumn or early winter, before the flu begins to circulate widely. This season, flu cases have already been reported across the county.
Flu is much more serious than a common cold. It can lead to severe lung or airway infections like bronchitis and pneumonia, and may worsen existing health conditions. Vaccination helps lower these risks and prevents the virus from spreading to others.
“Protecting yourself means protecting others. With flu already circulating, now is the perfect time for those who are eligible. It’s quick, safe and helps stop the spread to those most at risk.”
— Councillor Graham Oakes, Somerset Council’s Executive Member for Public Health, Climate Change and Environment
Because the flu virus changes each year, annual vaccination is advised. The NHS will inform eligible residents when it’s time to book an appointment. Those who believe they qualify but haven’t been contacted should speak to their GP practice.
Somerset Council reminds eligible residents to get the annual flu vaccine now, as early immunisation offers the best protection against seasonal flu and prevents severe illness.
