It’s time to display the red, white, and blue — the colors of the American flag, a symbol of freedom and service. These colors have been official since June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress enacted the Flag Act.
They are carried into battlefields, flown over government buildings, schools, and cemeteries. The Continental Congress assigned meaning to each color in 1782:
Secretary Charles Thomson stated these meanings, emphasizing the deep patriotism associated with the flag’s colors.
American Legion members work regularly to maintain flags damaged by wind and weather, such as those at Graceland Cemetery. During these workdays, members also educate youth on the proper handling and respect due to the flag. For example, Legion members Gene Williams and Steve Struchen demonstrated the correct way to fold the flag, while LuAnn Jackson explained the symbolism of each fold.
The flags will be flown once again this weekend, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the American Legion members and many volunteers who help honor veterans through this visible show of respect and patriotism.
Author’s summary: The American Legion’s volunteer efforts preserve flag traditions and honor Veterans Day by educating youth and maintaining flags as enduring symbols of patriotism and respect.
