Alberta's Rocky View County Issues Fire Advisory as Dry Spell Persists
Although Alberta's official fire season ends on Friday, persistent dry weather has prompted new fire advisories across the southern part of the province. Rocky View County has issued alerts for both its eastern and western regions due to ongoing windy and arid conditions that pose a moderate fire risk, according to information from the county’s website.
Late-Season Fire Precautions
Deputy Fire Chief Bill Messner noted that issuing an advisory this late in the year is not unusual, given the weather’s unpredictability at this time of year.
“This is definitely a period of the season where honestly the weather can change very rapidly,” said Messner.
Messner added that dry conditions have already led to a rise in grass fires during the past week, with up to three incidents occurring in a single day. Some of these incidents may have been triggered by human activity, such as improperly discarded cigarettes.
“Please use the proper receptacles. Please don't flick them out of the window. That definitely can cause a lot of issues that way,” he said.
Current Restrictions and Safety Measures
Alongside the advisory, the county has imposed a fire ban that suspends all active permits for fireworks and outdoor burning. However, barbecues, camp stoves, and indoor fireplaces remain permitted.
Messner said there is no set timeline for lifting the advisory, although it will likely remain in place for at least another week if the dry conditions persist.
