Jennifer Lawrence has inspired new works by Elizabeth Peyton, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Philippe Parreno for W Magazine's latest portrait series. The actor has collaborated with these artists to create intimate portraits featured in the Art Issue of the magazine.
By her own admission, Jennifer Lawrence is not skilled at drawing, except for a simple horse head in profile, which she can sketch with a childlike charm. This candid detail emerged during her interview for W Magazine's Art Issue.
Since 2006, W Magazine has showcased the day’s luminaries through the eyes of contemporary artists. Past issues have featured Mickalene Thomas photographing Cardi B, Barbara Kruger adding text overlays on a nude Kim Kardashian, and George Clooney blending into Yayoi Kusama’s polka dot universe.
For this edition, Jennifer Lawrence was the subject of three different portraits, each artist offering a unique interpretation of the 35-year-old actor.
“We wanted to work with artists who approached portraiture in different ways and who worked in different mediums. Of course, it was also important that we connected to them on a personal level,” said Sara Moonves, editor in chief at W Magazine, via email. “Each of them approached the collaboration differently, but with great commitment and care.”
Each artist contributed a separate cover and distinct impression, reflecting their personal style and medium.
Jennifer Lawrence's collaboration with these contemporary artists highlights the intersection of celebrity and modern art through thoughtful and diverse portraiture.
