Director Edgar Wright shared that his new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man includes a subtle Easter egg featuring two generations of the Brolin family. The connection, as Wright explained, happened entirely by coincidence.
“Josh Brolin is not the only Brolin in this movie. By complete coincidence, his dad is in it as well,” said Wright.
Josh Brolin stars as the antagonist Dan Killian in the film. Before he joined the cast, Wright had already chosen to include a brief scene using a clip from an older film, Skyjacked, starring James Brolin, Josh’s father. In that film, James Brolin played a hijacker, and his appearance became a meaningful surprise once his son was later cast.
Wright recalled realizing the connection only after Josh Brolin was confirmed for the lead role. He then informed the actor that his father would appear on screen as part of the story’s world.
Edgar Wright unintentionally created a touching Brolin family connection in The Running Man when both James and Josh Brolin ended up sharing screen space across generations.
