California’s Employment Development Department
After serving 25 years in the US Navy, I believed I was ready to embrace civilian life. As a Navy corpsman, I cared for service members in diverse situations, guided sailors in career planning, mentored young recruits, and managed medical teams. I assumed transitioning to a new career would be straightforward.
However, once I removed my uniform for the last time, I faced an unexpected question: what now? Like many veterans, I found the shift from military to civilian life disorienting. The familiar structure, clear purpose, and strong sense of belonging vanished overnight.
I took several months off after retiring but realized I missed the service's rhythm. My wife, also a veteran, had successfully started her second career with support from the Employment Development Department (EDD). Encouraged by her, I decided to explore opportunities at EDD.
I began as a part-time employment representative, assisting job seekers with applications and connecting them to resources. Later, I became a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist at the Chula Vista America’s Job Center of California.
"Now, my mission is to help fellow veterans find meaningful employment and overcome barriers like homelessness, financial hardship, or uncertainty about their next steps."
Through dedicated support, we empower veterans to rebuild their lives with purpose and stability.
