On 5 and 6 November 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Romania. On Wednesday, 5 November, he met with the President of Romania, Nicuşor Dan.
During their joint press conference, the Secretary General expressed gratitude for Romania's contributions to Alliance defence and security, highlighting the country's leadership role in Black Sea security. He also praised Romania's commitment to raising defence spending and supporting Ukraine.
“Romania is invested in NATO – and, let me be clear, NATO is invested in Romania,”
Following this, he met with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and other senior national officials.
On 6 November, Mark Rutte spoke at the NATO-Industry Forum, NATO’s leading event for engagement with industry. The forum, titled “Rearming NATO – Innovate, Accelerate, Sustain,” gathered senior NATO civilian and military leaders, national policymakers, and executives from the defence, security, and deep-tech sectors.
The event built on decisions made by Allies at the June NATO Summit in The Hague, aiming to enhance cooperation with the defence industry and improve industry readiness to meet Allied needs.
“There simply is no strong defence without a strong defence industry,”
the Secretary General emphasized, underlining the importance of industry cooperation as Allies plan to increase defence investment to 5% of GDP by 2035 and expand defence production.
The visit highlighted Romania's key role in NATO’s security efforts and the critical partnership between the Alliance and the defence industry to strengthen collective defence capabilities.
