Daniel Owen, 47, and his 15-year-old son Cooper were fatally attacked by a swarm of what are believed to be Asian giant hornets, also called murder hornets, while ziplining at Green Jungle Park near Luang Prabang. The pair were descending from a tree when hundreds of these hornets attacked them.
They were first taken to a small clinic and then transferred to a nearby hospital for additional care, but both died several hours after the attack.
Phanomsay Phakan, a doctor at Phakan Arocavet Clinic, said, "They had a lot of stings, more than 100, over the whole body. I thought already that it’s a very dangerous situation because I had never seen it as bad as that."
Daniel Owen was the director of QSI International School in Haiphong, Vietnam, where Cooper was a student. The school shared a statement highlighting Daniel’s dedication:
"Dan dedicated 18 years to QSI, serving in five different schools and touching countless lives with his warmth, leadership, and unwavering commitment to education."
Green Jungle Park expressed condolences and announced a review of all safety procedures following the tragic incident.
