Paul Kelly has unveiled his new album Seventy, marking a significant year in his celebrated career. According to the official release, the record reflects both a life well-lived and Kelly’s ongoing creative quest to explore the essence of being human.
The album includes the striking single “Rita Wrote a Letter,” a continuation of the story from Kelly’s 1996 classic “How to Make Gravy.” This time, the song gives voice to Rita, while Joe continues to speak from beyond the grave. Kelly explained how the idea came to life after contemplating Rita’s perspective for years.
“About five years ago I wrote down the words, ‘Rita wrote a letter,’ and thought, ‘There’s my title,’” Kelly said.
The song’s lyrics carry Kelly’s trademark blend of sharp humor and emotional depth, showing how his storytelling continues to evolve.
Another standout from Seventy is “Happy Birthday, Ada Mae,” paired with a heartfelt music video directed by Kelly’s daughter, Maddy Kelly. The clip stars his granddaughter, two-year-old Ada Mae, offering an intimate reflection on love, time, and legacy.
“In the end, love is all of us that remains,” Kelly said. “It’s a joy working with my daughter and granddaughter.”
The release underscores Kelly’s connection to family and his enduring ability to weave personal experience into universal art.
Paul Kelly’s Seventy intertwines reflection, family, and creativity, reaffirming his place as one of Australia’s most insightful musical storytellers.
