China has implemented a comprehensive ban on imports of all Thai syrups and premixed sugar products after 10 factories failed recent safety and hygiene inspections by Chinese authorities.
The inspections, conducted from July to September and coordinated with Thailand's National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity and Food Standards, identified several issues including inadequate sanitary controls and poor separation between production and administrative zones.
Todsaporn Ruangpattananont, president of the Thai Sugar Product Association, stated: "None of the factories inspected passed GACC's audit despite major investments to meet standards. This closure of all export channels will cost the industry billions of baht."
The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) cited non-compliance with food safety and production control requirements as the basis for the ban.
The ban has raised serious concerns over potential widespread factory closures and job losses in Thailand's processed sugar sector.
The broad restrictions disrupt all export categories, threatening significant economic losses for Thailand’s sugar product industry.
