Thailand to slap import duties on all low-value online goods

Thailand to Impose Import Duties on Low-Value Online Goods

Thailand plans to introduce import duties on low-cost online goods to increase government revenue and create a fairer market for domestic producers compared to foreign online sellers. This measure targets items valued under 1,500 baht, including those costing as little as 1 baht, which were previously exempt from import duties.

Customs Department Strategy and Expected Impact

Phanthong Loykulnanta, director-general of the Customs Department, announced this new policy as part of the government’s Quick Big Win strategy. He anticipates the move could raise customs revenue by up to 3 billion baht.

“The goal is to ensure fair competition between domestic producers and foreign importers.”

Starting in July, the department has already collected around 2 billion baht in VAT from low-value imports. Adding import duties is the next step, focusing particularly on goods purchased from major online platforms such as Shopee and Lazada.

Collaboration with Online Platforms

Phanthong Loykulnanta plans to meet with Shopee and Lazada on November 7 to discuss implementation details. Authorities expect these platforms to declare the value and tariff classification of each imported item to facilitate customs assessment.

Failure to comply could lead to delays in customs clearance, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enforce the new regulations effectively.

Author’s summary: Thailand introduces import duties on low-value online goods under 1,500 baht to enhance revenue and ensure fair competition between domestic and foreign sellers.
