In an email confirming his termination, Coach Brian Kelly thanked LSU Athletics Director Scott Woodward and other administrators for the chance to lead the football program. He expressed willingness to negotiate a financial settlement for the amount owed to him under his contract.
“Despite your decision to let me go today, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead this program over the last four years and wish you all the best going forward.”
Brian Kelly was dismissed on October 26 following a disappointing home loss to Texas A&M. His overall record at LSU stood at 34-14, with a 19-10 record in SEC competition.
While Kelly's contract includes a $54 million buyout, sources suggest the ultimate payout will be considerably less. In his email, Kelly acknowledged the ongoing dialogue about the buyout:
“As we discussed in our meeting, I’m open to your desire to reach a settlement of what’s owed to me under the contract, although of course it would have to make sense financially.”
LSU Athletics officials Verge Ausberry, Julie Cromer, and Austin Thomas were also copied on the message. The email was obtained by WAFB through a public records request.
