Steve Nash recently shared a humorous yet revealing story about the moment he realized it was time to retire. His period with the Los Angeles Lakers turned out far rougher than expected, as recurring injuries and physical setbacks took their toll.
During an episode of Mind the Game with LeBron James, Nash recalled how facing Stephen Curry in a preseason game made him confront the reality of his declining condition.
“I gotta find out, can I play hurt or what’s the point?”
In that preseason game between the Lakers and the Warriors, Golden State dominated the first quarter 39–13, leaving Nash, a two-time MVP, questioning his future on the court.
“I’m guarding Steph. I couldn’t stop him if I was 100 percent. I’m dragging around, and Steve Kerr is putting me in every action. I’m looking over at Steve like, ‘C’mon, Stevie.’ They’re laughing at me.”
After reflecting for a few days, Nash reached a calm conclusion about his career.
“Yeah, I think it’s time.”
That preseason matchup against the Warriors effectively marked the end of Nash’s distinguished journey in basketball. Playing the full first quarter alongside Kobe Bryant, he managed three points, two rebounds, and one assist as Golden State overwhelmed the Lakers.
Steve Nash humorously admitted that guarding Stephen Curry in a preseason game made him accept it was time to retire after years of battling injuries with the Lakers.
