It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Bill Chedore, former 1st National Vice-President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). He was a dedicated leader and advocate for seniors and people with disabilities, committed to fairness and equality.
In 1983, Brother Chedore transitioned from his role as president of the Campbellton local to become CUPW’s 1st National Vice-President. Over the next four years, he helped guide the union through its first round of negotiations under the Canada Labour Code.
Chedore was instrumental in shaping CUPW into a union that emphasized human rights and international solidarity. He supported global labour movements and stood firmly with the South African Congress of Trade Unions Solidarity Committee, which operated from CUPW Toronto Local’s office.
“Brother Chedore helped transform CUPW into a union that championed equality, safety, and solidarity across borders.”
In 1987, Bill joined the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) as National Coordinator for Education Services. Later, as National Coordinator for Health and Safety and the Environment, he became a respected voice advocating for safer workplaces across the federal sector. His dedication to worker safety and environmental responsibility earned him national recognition.
After retiring from the CLC in 2010, Bill continued his service to workers as National Coordinator of the Canadian Injured Workers Alliance. His lifelong commitment to justice and fairness leaves a lasting mark on Canada’s labour movement.
Author’s Summary: Bill Chedore’s lifelong dedication to labour rights, equality, and worker safety continues to inspire collective progress and solidarity across Canada.
