Singer Sam Smith shared that they underwent liposuction at the age of 13 after being severely bullied about their weight during secondary school. The non-binary artist said that dealing with their body image was more difficult than confronting their queerness.
"Weirdly, my weight was the thing I probably got teased the most about," Sam said on the Podcrushed podcast.
Sam, now 33, reflected on their experience at a Catholic high school in Hertfordshire. The persistent bullying and discomfort with activities like swimming or changing in the locker room led them to undergo chest liposuction as a teenager.
"I had surgery on my chest when I was 13 years old because I had a growing chest. There were all sorts of reasons why, but mainly, I was just getting so teased, I couldn't go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell."
They added that their parents supported the decision, realizing how deeply the situation affected their confidence and mental well-being.
"My parents were hugely supportive of the whole thing because they just saw how much it was crippling everything about me."
Despite the operation, Sam admitted that it did not bring the anticipated results.
"The surgery wasn't a success because I just love food."
Sam Smith revealed on a podcast that at 13 they had liposuction to cope with severe bullying over their weight, noting the experience left a lasting mark on their youth.
