During LSU’s 20-9 loss to No. 4 Alabama, starting quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was benched for the first time this season while the game was still competitive. Sophomore Michael Van Buren replaced him in the third quarter.
“I haven’t put that kind of thought into right now,” Wilson said. “Right now, I just want to be there for our players to let them know we’re going to be all right, to pick their heads up and we’re standing by you. Decisions of depth moving forward, we’re not at that stage right now.”
Van Buren entered after LSU settled for a field goal on the second half’s opening drive. LSU had a first-and-goal at Alabama’s 9-yard line but struggled to advance, gaining only one yard on two plays, then fell back due to a delay of game penalty. Nussmeier was subsequently sacked for a 14-yard loss.
Author’s summary: LSU's quarterback situation remains unsettled as the team seeks stability, with interim coach Frank Wilson prioritizing player support over immediate depth decisions.
