Boston Celtics guard Anfernee Simons values the growth he achieved under the guidance of his mentor, CJ McCollum. Unlike many NBA players, Simons took a non-traditional path by spending a postgraduate year at IMG Academy in Florida instead of going to college after high school. This time away from the spotlight added a layer of mystery that helped him get selected 24th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2018 NBA Draft.
In Portland, Simons played alongside two veteran guards who greatly influenced his development: Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. Before a recent game against McCollum's Washington Wizards, Simons highlighted the balance he learned from McCollum that has shaped his play style.
“As much as, obviously, everybody talks about my mentorship with Dame, obviously, and CJ is also a big part of my development, especially as a young player,” said Simons. “Just giving that, like kind of balance of both play styles, and so just his shiftiness and his ability to just get to the spots he want to get to, and his craftiness around the rim. I think those are things that I took the most from CJ.”
Simons credited McCollum for teaching him effectiveness despite not being the most athletic or fastest player on the court. This guidance has helped Simons adapt and thrive in the NBA.
“He's helped me tremendously throughout my career: how to play even when he might not be the most athletic, the fastest, and being able to be effective at the same time. So, I credit him for a lot as well as Dame.”
Anfernee Simons highlights CJ McCollum's crucial role in teaching him balance and craftiness, which has been essential in his growth as an NBA player.
