A powerful tornado hit the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, causing significant destruction and claiming six lives, the state government reported on Saturday.
According to Reuters, Rio Bonito do Iguacu was the hardest-hit town late Friday. The state’s civil defense agency revealed that more than half of the urban area experienced roof collapses and various structural damages.
The nearby city of Guarapuava also suffered from the tornado's impact, adding to the regional devastation.
The Paraná Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring System reported tornado winds ranged from 180 kph (111 mph) to 250 kph (155 mph).
Institutional Relations Minister Gleisi Hoffmann said she would visit the affected region with acting Health Minister Adriano Massuda and other federal officials to aid relief and recovery operations.
"We will continue to assist the people of Paraná and provide all the help needed," President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva wrote on X, offering condolences to the victims' families.
The tornado left six dead, hundreds injured, and thousands displaced, prompting government officials to mobilize support and emergency aid swiftly.
