Mark Parton MLA has been chosen as the new Leader of the Canberra Liberals, with Deborah Morris MLA appointed as Deputy Leader. Earlier today, former leader Leanne Castley and deputy Jeremy Hanson stepped down to give the party the best chance at success in the 2028 election.
The party held a Liberals Party Room meeting where neither Ms. Castley nor Mr. Hanson sought to retain their leadership roles. Mr. Parton, who has been a Legislative Assembly member since 2016, and Ms. Morris, elected last year, were confirmed in their new positions.
“With support from all elected members, I can announce that I have accepted the position.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson for their work over the last 12 months.
It’s vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our Party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose. Our priority remains clear: continue building an alternative government that delivers for the ACT.”
Following his election, Mr. Parton resigned as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. A new Speaker will be elected in December, and until then, ACT Greens MLA Andrew Braddock will act as Deputy Speaker.
Leanne Castley became the party leader after the October 2024 election, replacing Elizabeth Lee.
Mark Parton's leadership aims to unify the Canberra Liberals and strengthen their position ahead of the 2028 election, emphasizing dialogue and shared goals within the party.
