New Toyota Hilux Bakkie Fully Revealed

The new Toyota Hilux has officially been unveiled in Thailand, marking the debut of its 9th generation. Despite being based on the outgoing platform, the pickup introduces updated styling, a refreshed interior, and for the first time, an all-electric variant.

Following numerous leaks and a short teaser campaign, the new Hilux arrives roughly ten years after the previous model. Its unveiling carries particular importance for South Africa, where the Hilux has been the best-selling vehicle since its first local appearance in 1969. The bakkie continues to be assembled at Toyota South Africa Motors’ Prospecton plant in KwaZulu-Natal.

Design and Platform

The 9th-generation model retains the IMV platform, now featuring new hydraulic engine mounts and shear-type cabin mounts designed to reduce vibrations and improve ride comfort.

Several body panels, such as the doors and roof, appear to have been reused from the previous generation. The load bay also seems to carry over, and the overall dimensions, including the wheelbase, remain largely the same.

Exterior Updates

The most notable design change is found at the front. Most trim levels now showcase a honeycomb-style grille inspired by the Corolla Cross, paired with sharper, more defined headlamps for a modern look.

“Reduce vibrations and enhance ride comfort.”
Significance for South Africa

The Hilux’s continued evolution reinforces its longstanding reputation as South Africa’s most popular vehicle. Its combination of reliability, local production, and now electrification ensures its ongoing presence in the country’s automotive landscape.
