UPDATE, 3:40 PM: Mark Parton, newly elected leader of the Canberra Liberals, along with his deputy Deborah Morris, emphasized their commitment to uniting the party ahead of the 2028 election.
Parton expressed frustration with internal disputes distracting from broader public concerns. He stated,
“I’m absolutely sick to death of having conversations about internal party matters because I can tell you that people out in the suburbs are not having those conversations.”
He vowed to lead the nine parliamentary members in a unified direction to challenge the government in 2028.
Parton acknowledged the party had experienced division but noted that former leaders Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson had stepped aside, allowing a fresh start with a unity ticket.
Regarding the nature of the party's split, he shared his perspective:
“I think in recent months my party’s been divided by a line that separates people who hang on to shit and people who leave shit behind, and it is time to leave shit behind.”
Known as the party’s strongest media performer, Parton has long been viewed as leadership material but previously lacked either the numbers or the willingness to take on the role.
Author’s summary: Mark Parton commits to leaving internal conflicts behind and leading a united Canberra Liberals team focused on winning the 2028 election.
