Penny Lancaster, wife of legendary singer Sir Rod Stewart, revealed a touching glimpse into their family life, recalling the early days of raising their children and Rod’s evolution as a father.
Rod Stewart, who shares two sons, Alastair and Aiden, with Penny, was initially hesitant to embrace fatherhood again when they met in the 1990s. Despite his doubts, he grew deeply involved with his young family after their firstborn arrived.
Their romance began in 1999, leading to a Paris proposal in 2005. They married in 2007 in a grand celebration at La Cervara, a medieval monastery by the Italian Riviera. Earlier this year, Penny, now 54, and Rod, 80, marked their 18th wedding anniversary.
In her memoir Someone Like Me, Penny opened up about the difficulties of caring for their first child, who suffered from colic. She described those early days as both exhausting and nerve-wracking.
“Every afternoon at exactly 4pm he’d give a shrill scream that sounded as though he was dying,” she wrote. “In the end, the only thing that would calm him was the sound of Rod’s Great American Songbook collection gently playing.”
Penny suggested the music reminded their baby of the comfort of the womb, since she often accompanied Rod to recording sessions during her pregnancy.
When Alastair was born, Rod named his tour the Alastair Wallace Stewart Tour, planning flights around his son’s nap schedule. Penny even kept the baby’s Moses basket beside their bed during the tour, blending family and career in a unique rhythm.
