Environment Canada has extended weather warnings for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii to include heavy rainfall alerts in North Coast regions as of Saturday.
The weekend’s wind warnings for North Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii remain in effect, with southeasterly winds expected to reach 70 to 90 km/h and gusts up to 110 km/h over exposed coastal areas.
“An intensifying frontal system will impact the B.C. coast today and overnight into Sunday morning,” says Environment Canada.
Gusts began Saturday morning and should ease by Sunday, but power outages, service interruptions, and travel disruptions are possible during the storm.
DriveBC has also issued a caution for North Coast roads, advising drivers to be extra careful over the next few days.
On Saturday morning, rainfall warnings were set for Haida Gwaii and North Coast communities such as Kitimat, Stewart, and Terrace.
Precipitation between 50 and 85 millimetres is expected from Saturday through late Sunday.
“Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. Stay away from fallen power lines,” warns Environment Canada.
