Toyota has revealed what it calls the “most Australian Hilux ever developed,” set to arrive in Australian showrooms within weeks. The ninth-generation Hilux keeps its focus on what local buyers value the most, combining familiarity with subtle innovation.
While the U.S. Tacoma switched to the GA-F platform in 2022, the new Hilux continues on the IMV architecture that supported its predecessor. The cabin design remains mostly unchanged, maintaining the dependable structure long appreciated by drivers.
The 2.8-litre 1GD turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine carries over, delivering 150 kW and 500 Nm with the six-speed automatic transmission. Manual variants retain a torque limit of 420 Nm. Dual-cab SR5 models and above now include a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, providing an extra 8.5 kW and 65 Nm at low speeds.
A fully electric Hilux has been confirmed for 2026, followed by a hydrogen fuel cell version in 2028. While hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants are not yet planned, they also haven’t been ruled out.

The ninth-generation Hilux keeps its proven architecture but adds electrification, blending tradition with forward-looking updates for 2026.
