Is the Philippines Facing Another Disaster After Super Typhoon Uwan?

After the impact of Super Typhoon Uwan, Filipinos are now concerned about a potential tsunami linked to a recent earthquake in Japan. Northern Luzon is still recovering from the typhoon's strong winds and heavy rains, while the skies remain unsettled.

Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

At 5:03 PM on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a magnitude 6.9 earthquake near Iwate Prefecture. This quake generated tsunami waves measuring up to 20 centimetres, which hit the ports of Ofunato and Kuji.

As a precaution, the JMA warns that people in the area must remain alert since stronger aftershocks and larger tsunamis could occur within the next few days.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or significant structural damage from the earthquake and resulting tsunami. The JMA continues to monitor for any possible aftershocks or follow-up tremors.

Warnings and Preparedness

This event has revived memories of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake that triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific, including the Philippines.

Current Situation in the Philippines

At the same time, the Philippines is still coping with the aftermath of Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong), which made landfall over La Union early Monday morning.
