Paris has launched an unusual initiative allowing its citizens to be buried beside renowned figures in some of the city’s most iconic cemeteries, including Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse, and Montmartre.
The Paris city council has established a lottery due to limited burial land and high demand. Ten gravestones in each cemetery are available for purchase at €4000. Applicants must be residents of Paris.
Winners will be required to restore the chosen gravestones to secure their burial spot. Burial rights cost from €976 for a 10-year term and up to €17,668 for perpetual ownership.
If the new owner fails to maintain or fulfill obligations, both the burial rights and the deposit will be forfeited.
“Parisians now have a chance to rest beside their idols such as Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, and Édith Piaf.”
These historic cemeteries already host the remains of legendary artists, musicians, and writers, turning each burial site into a cultural and emotional landmark.
This idea echoes the Hollywood tradition of resting among celebrated figures, once popularized by stars like Marilyn Monroe.
