Carmelo Anthony shared a key insight on what Cade Cunningham should focus on to unlock his full potential. Speaking on his podcast, the former NBA star explained that the young Detroit Pistons guard is showing signs of growth but still has areas to refine.
“His feel,” Anthony said on his podcast 7PM in Brooklyn. “Like, the feel for the game, his flow of the game.”
Anthony emphasized that Cunningham is beginning to realize his leadership role within the Pistons organization.
“I think what we’re seeing with Cade is that he’s starting to understand he’s wearing the white hat and running that organ. With that comes confidence, and with that comes responsibility too.”
Since being drafted first overall in 2021, Cunningham’s progression has been steady. After averaging 5.6 assists per game as a rookie, he has evolved into one of the league’s top playmakers. Last season he averaged 9.1 assists, and this year he maintains that same strong performance.
According to Melo, improvement in game awareness and leadership is what can truly push Cunningham into the superstar tier. While his statistical growth is impressive, understanding how to control the team’s rhythm and momentum is what could define his next breakthrough.
Carmelo Anthony believes Cade Cunningham’s rise to NBA superstardom hinges on mastering his leadership and game control to complement his growing playmaking skills.
