The sports betting scandal has shaken Major League Baseball following the indictment of Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz. Federal prosecutors accuse both players of engaging in an illegal betting operation that involved prearranging specific pitches to benefit certain wagers.
The indictment reveals that Clase and Ortiz worked with accomplices to place hundreds of fraudulent bets
on precise game actions. They face charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to influence sporting contests through bribery, and money laundering.
The illegal betting plan, which Clase reportedly started around May 2023, did not always succeed. On May 28, 2025, during a Guardians vs. Dodgers game, Clase and bettors wagered approximately $4,000 that the first pitch would be a ball or hit. Clase threw a deliberately low pitch outside the strike zone, but Dodgers batter Andy Pages swung, spoiling the bet.
This failed pitch led to a tense text exchange, now presented as part of the prosecution’s evidence.
Clase's actions have seriously jeopardized both his career and the integrity of the sport, exposing him to significant legal repercussions.
Summary: Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz stand accused of orchestrating an illegal betting scheme involving pitch-fixing, leading to serious criminal charges and threatening the integrity of Major League Baseball.
