On Monday morning, Sara Cox started the demanding 135-mile Great Northern Marathon Challenge from Kielder Forest. This marks Radio 2's longest-ever BBC Children In Need Challenge, scheduled to last five days.
At the starting line, Sara, 50, was cheered on by local residents and a distinctive supporter — a bagpiper. Upon reaching Northumberland, she was greeted by alpacas, adding a unique touch to her journey.
"I'm feeling good. I'm feeling more relaxed than I have been for weeks because I've been so nervous in the buildup but now we are actually here and we're going to do it, I feel good thanks... I mean the rain is not great. There's a lot of heavy drizzle, it has paused momentarily but my toes are already soggy."
After months of rigorous training, Sara set off carrying a light Pudsey Bear backpack weighing only 270 grams. Her goal is to deliver Pudsey, BBC Children In Need's iconic mascot, from the border to Leeds by Friday, symbolizing a meaningful journey.
Author’s summary: Sara Cox is undertaking a five-day, 135-mile marathon from Kielder Forest to Leeds, carrying Pudsey Bear to raise awareness for BBC Children In Need, supported by both locals and unexpected animal companions.
