Morrisons has confirmed it will shut down 145 locations across the United Kingdom as part of a wide-scale operational overhaul. The closures include 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and 52 in‑store cafes, along with Market Kitchens, pharmacies, and florists expected to follow before the end of the year.
The supermarket chain explained that the move aims to simplify operations and repurpose space in underperforming areas. Most of the Daily store closures have already been completed, with the remaining sites scheduled to close by late 2025.
“In most locations, the Morrisons Cafe has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and reallocation of the space is the only sensible option,” said Chief Executive Rami Baitieh.
“Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. But as we modernise, we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic.”
In stores affected by counter and cafe closures, Morrisons plans to collaborate with external partners to bring in new specialist offerings aligned with local demand.
Author’s summary: Morrisons will close 145 UK outlets this year to streamline operations and adapt to financial pressures while maintaining its Market Street focus.
