Morrisons has announced additional operational changes, continuing a trend of closures that began last year. The supermarket planned to shut down 145 locations, including 17 Daily Stores and 52 cafes.
While many of these sites have already closed, some Market Kitchens, pharmacies, and florists remain at risk before 2026. Among notable closures was the Great Barr branch in Birmingham, which shut on April 16 of this year.
"In most locations, the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option." – Rami Baitiéh, Morrisons' CEO
"Market Street is a beacon of differentiation for Morrisons and we remain committed to it. But as we modernise we are making some necessary changes to the areas of the model which are simply uneconomic." – Rami Baitiéh
"In some stores where we are closing counters or Cafés, we plan to work with third parties to provide a relevant specialist offer." – Rami Baitiéh
Morrisons is strategically closing underperforming stores and cafes while aiming to maintain its Market Street brand and exploring partnerships to enhance specialist offerings.
