The City of Canning is pursuing government funding to improve lighting at Ferndale Park as part of a proposed $6 million redevelopment. The park, located on Metcalfe Road, serves four major sporting clubs with around 400 members and includes three ovals. Currently, only two ovals have lighting, which restricts evening training, especially during winter.
The first priority is to install lighting with up to 100 lux, switchable to 50 lux, at one oval to support safe training and matches for large ball sports. This upgrade also aims to address the shortage of suitable Australian rules football grounds in the city.
The upgrade is expected to cost just over $500,000, with $165,000 requested from City Night Lights, $40,000 already secured, and the City of Canning committed to providing $298,000.
Despite the plans, there are concerns about whether the funding will be available to complete these improvements.
