In a race dominated by incumbents, a newcomer emerged victorious in the election for the Pittston Area Board of Education, according to preliminary results released by Luzerne County on Tuesday.
With all precincts reporting, Marissa Chiumento secured a seat on the school board, finishing strongly in first place. She received 5,857 votes, outpacing her closest rival by 381 ballots.
Chiumento is a clinical pharmacist specializing in endocrinology at Geisinger and owns a local entertainment business. She was nominated by both the Democratic and Republican parties.
“I have noticed a trend of families choosing private schools over public education. It is important that Pittston Area focuses on student career readiness and overall wellbeing,” said Chiumento during her campaign.
Adonizio and Healey were also nominated by both parties, while Quinn, a longtime board member of about 35 years and the namesake of a district school, secured only the Democratic nomination, which likely affected his lower vote count.
The top four candidates earned seats on the school board.
