Gold miners Fresnillo and Endeavour Mining saw significant gains, leaping 9.1% and 11% respectively.
The FTSE 250 ended 262.48 points higher, a 1.2% increase, at 22,064.32, while the AIM All-Share rose 6.14 points, a 0.8% increase, to 792.47.
In European equities, the CAC 40 in Paris closed up 0.2%, and the DAX 40 in Frankfurt ended up 0.6%.
