Botswana Launches Indigenous Insurer
A new model of citizen-driven participation in the financial services sector has been introduced with the launch of Babereki Life Insurance Company (BLIC).
The company provides ordinary citizens with a direct stake in ownership and governance, reflecting a shift towards local control in an industry long dominated by multinational firms.
“Botswana deserves a life insurance company that reflects our beliefs, our culture, and our collective aspiration for a secure and prosperous future,”
said Tshepo Jim, BLIC’s founding CEO, at the launch.
In other news, the government has begun drafting a dedicated Gender Based Violence Bill, announced by Minister Lesego Chombo, a crucial step forward as the country faces a national crisis with over two-thirds of women experiencing abuse.
