No. 3 Virginia field hockey needed a win to return to form after a loss to No. 2 North Carolina last week.
“Coming off of a loss we really wanted to capitalize on today,” Nemec said.
The team played a home game against No. 7 Liberty, which provided the perfect opportunity for a win. The game was expected to be a defensive battle, with Liberty ranking second in shutouts per game and Virginia ranking third in save percentage.
The Cavaliers took the lead with a goal from graduate midfielder Suze Leemans, scoring off a deflected shot into the circle eight minutes into the game. They held on to win 1-0, stifling Liberty's attempt at an equalizer in the second half.
