Carson, a scholar, artist, and emcee, gained national attention with his doctoral dissertation, a 34-track rap album titled Owning My Masters: The Rhetorics of Rhymes and Revolution.
He has now released a new book, Being Dope: Hip Hop in Theory Through Mixtape Memoir, which explores art, politics, and survival in hostile institutions.
Carson reflects on his time at Clemson University in South Carolina (2013–2017), describing the environment as "like going backward in time.
