Local Kicker Had Big Moment During 1987 Strike

This story is part of a series from Sal Maiorana documenting the unforgettable moments in the current Highmark Stadium.

1987 Game: Bills 6, Giants 3

On October 18, 1987, a memorable game took place at the stadium in Orchard Park.

There have been hundreds of games played at the stadium across its 53 years, but the brand of "NFL" football on display on this day was the worst.

In 1987, the NFL Players' Association went on strike, and rather than cancel games, the owners imported replacement players to fill their rosters.

The Buffalo Bills' scab players were unimpressive and they lost their first game 47-6 at Rich Stadium to the Colts.

NFL veteran quarterback Gary Hogeboom crossed the picket line and played for Indianapolis, throwing for 318 yards and five touchdowns.

Author's summary: Memorable game during 1987 strike.
