The country ranks third in the European Union, behind Cyprus and Denmark, in terms of food waste, with 201 kilograms of food wasted per capita in 2023.

The average food waste in the European Union is considerably lower, at 130 kg/capita per year.

In 2023, Greece threw away more than 2.09 million tons of food, while 7% of the population faces moderate or severe food insecurity, according to the Greek Statistics Authority (ELSTAT).
