Newsom reverses a data sharing law meant to increase CalFresh enrollment

Newsom Reverses Data Sharing Law

A new California law protects private data from the federal government. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law limiting data sharing to increase CalFresh recipients.

The law was in response to the federal government's attempts to collect private data. Assembly Bill 593, by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, forbids state and local departments from sharing sensitive personal data to increase food stamp enrollment.

A law that allowed the sharing of limitless amounts of personal data across the state to find people eligible for CalFresh was rescinded.

Author's summary: California limits data sharing to protect private information.
