Greater Sudbury Police Service Chief Sara Cunningham has announced a crackdown on open drug use in the city's downtown core, starting in November.
“We will no longer tolerate open drug use,”
Police will increase their visibility in the area and make more arrests for open drug use, while also targeting drug dealers through undercover efforts.
Chief Cunningham emphasized that the issue is complex and extends beyond the jurisdiction of police, stating that
“It’s a health crisis we’re not going to enforce our way out of”, but also acknowledged that enforcement may be necessary in some situations.
The plan was announced during a police board meeting, and Chief Cunningham shared additional details with local journalists.
