Counting for the Irish Presidential Election has begun, with Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys awaiting the results to determine Ireland's 10th President.
Turnout is considered crucial in this election. According to People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy:
"Voters have delivered an historic rejection of Fine Gael and Fianna Fail and a victory for the left. Despite a negative campaign of fears and smears from the political establishment, people appear to have delivered the largest Presidential vote ever - for Catherine Connolly. This is a vote for the values she embodies - defending our neutrality, opposing war and genocide, and ending the normalisation of homelessness and inequality. It is a vote for an Ireland which values our language and our history of anti-colonial struggle and solidarity. It is also a vote against Fianna Fail and Fine Gael and their budget that delivered for big developers and fast food outlets by pushing more working class people into poverty."
