A new programme is being launched across County Councils to involve stakeholders and residents in making communities safer.
The Local Community Safety Partnerships will replace the defunct Joint Police Committees and include a wider range of people, such as local residents, HSE, and Gardai.
The government is advising that media access to these meetings be limited or not allowed, with the decision left to the committee's chair.
The National Union of Journalists has said that this will only serve to undermine public confidence if reporters are not allowed into these meetings.
