Michael Whelan, a 69-year-old native of Waterford, embarked on a 3,000-kilometre journey from Osh, Kyrgyzstan to Karachi, Pakistan, along the Silk Road, an age-old trade route.
Over the course of two months, he battled freezing temperatures, mountainous ascents, and wafer-thin oxygen levels.
"You just have to slow down," says Michael. "I generally find with younger people they tend to have a target and an itinerary. They'll say, ‘I'm going to go from A to B today’, and they’ll want to get to B, where I don't do that at all. You have to just take it as it comes."
Michael's approach to the journey was to take it one day at a time, without a strict target or itinerary.
