Why Malaysia's Gig Workers Bill entrenches workers' dependency, not protection - Aliran

Malaysia's Gig Workers Bill

The legislation, despite claims of worker protection, may deepen Malaysia's dependence on foreign tech platforms and leave gig workers trapped in precarious employment.

Malaysia's gig economy is closely tied to its semi-peripheral position in global capitalism, with the country being highly dependent on foreign direct investment in high-tech sectors.

Malaysia remains reliant on foreign direct investment and global monopoly-finance capital, thereby reproducing Malaysia’s semi-peripheral dependency (Amin, 1976).

This dependence on foreign investment may entrench workers' dependency rather than provide protection.

Author's note: Legislation may worsen gig workers' situation.
