Starting from second on the grid, Tsuboi took the lead from the pole-winning Cerumo Toyota of Hiroaki Ishiura on the first lap, utilizing his superior tire warm-up to take the lead at the exit of Turn 4.
Tsuboi led for the remainder of the opening stint, with Bertrand Baguette also passing Ishiura for second, and the TOM'S Toyota maintained the advantage when Tsuboi pitted to hand over to Yamashita on lap 23 of 63.
